26, 1949. He died March 25, 1959. Alice was a graduate of Washington High School and completed two years of business school in Cedar Rapids. She worked as a secretary at National Oats Company and subsequently was a bookkeeper at Farmer's Cooperative Exchange in Central City. Memorial may be directed to a charity of the donor's choice in Alice's memory.

Coburn on June 13, 1939, in Brooklyn, Iowa. Following the death of her husband in 1963, she learned to drive, went to Commercial College to learn secretarial skills, and for over 20 years served as secretary to the chief of police in Iowa City.

In retirement she spent her days gardening and raising flowers in the summer, and crocheting afghans in the winter months. She always had a dog for a companion and was very devoted to each of them. Every holiday season, her homemade candies were highly anticipated and relished by all. Mary gained the respect and love. of all who knew her.

Her family includes her three children, Keith W.J. Coburn and his wife Marilyn of West Branch, Lowell "Mike" Coburn Jr. of Iowa City and Ruth H. Ezell and her husband Tom of Many, grandchildren, Kelly Coburn (Becky), Dan Coburn (Mary Pat), Julie Brohammer (Tom), Tom Coburn (Carrie), Kari Rivers (Barry) and Mark Ezell (Tessa); 10 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Frances Griffith and Lorraine Estes, both of Brooklyn, Iowa, and Emma Lou Phelan of Cherokee. 10, 1908, in Newport Township of Johnson County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Anna Kasper. She married William A. Maier on April 15, 1931, in Iowa City. The couple farmed in Johnson County all their married lives. William died on Feb.

24, 1978. Agnes continued to live on the farm until 2002, when she moved to Atrium Village in Hills. Agnes was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church in Iowa City, the Union Township Ladies group and Jonco-Jills. Agnes always enjoyed playing cards, doing puzzles and especially a good game of Yatzee to those who dared to take her on! On the farm she cared for her garden, chickens and of course, her ducks.

Her family includes two sons and their wives, John and Janice Maier and Donald and Virginia Maier, all of Iowa City; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Anna Marie Kral; son-in-law, Donald Kral; great-granddaughter, Tiffany Ann; six brothers; and one sister. 16, 1924, in Solon, Iowa, the son of John and Anna (Zachar) Novy. He graduated from Solon High School where he participated in baseball. On Jan. 17, 1945, Don married Margaret Greazel at St. Wenceslaus Church in Iowa City.

In May 1945, he enlisted in the 1st Cavalry Division of the Army. After completing basic training as a Sergeant at Fort Riley, Kansas, he participated in the invasion of Japan at the end of World War II. While being stationed in Japan, Don acquired his interest in gardening after taking a horticulture class. In 1954 he was hired as superintendent of Greenhouses at the University of Iowa, where he supervised the care of greenhouses in the Plant Physiology Building and the Chemistry Botany Building. In 1978, Don was hired as head gardener at the Brucemore Estate in Cedar Rapids.

He was responsible for many duties around the estate, but much of his time was devoted to the formal gardens, the care of hundreds of rose bushes, and the growing and nurturing of Christmas poinsettias for the Brucemore Mansion. Due to a decline in his health, Don retired from Brucemore in 2003. Don's work was admired by thousands of Brucemore visitors and was featured in a 1991 article in Midwest Living. In addition to gardening, Don was active in A.A. as a sponsor and helped many to achieve sobriety, along with his own recovery of 40 years.

He was also a member of the American Legion, the Loyal Order of the Moose, the V.F.W. and St. Wenceslaus Church. Don is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret; son, Fred Novy of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Lynn (Pete) Weyer of Iowa City; sister, Ann Shimon of Solon; sister-in-law, Wilma Novy of Cedar Rapids; and grandchildren, Joe (Stacey) Purvis of Newton, Casey Novy (and fiance Matt Betourney) of Chicago, Matt and Maggie Weyer of Iowa City, Erin Weyer of Minneapolis, and greatgranddaughter, Grace Purvis of Newton. He also is survived by a special aunt, Carolyn Shimek of Cedar Rapids; and special niece, Judy Casey Serbousek of Iowa City, along with numerous nieces and nephews and their children.

Don was preceded in. death by one brother, Milo Novy; and five sisters, Elsie Dvorsky, Mary Mahoney, Georgia Randall, Emily Stochl and Lenora Stochl; and one brother and sister who died in infancy. 14, 1952, he married Norma Jean Smith at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City. John graduated from Iowa City High School in 1952, where he served as senior class president and was a Nile Kinnick Scholarship nominee. He earned his B.A. Degree from the University of Iowa in 1956, at which time he was commissioned a 2nd Lt.

in the U.S. Army. He served two years active duty at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, and completed his six-year military obligation in the U.S.

Army Reserves. John attended graduate school at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, and earned his Master's Degree in Counseling from The University of Iowa in 1963. In 1975, he earned his Ph.D. Degree in Counseling and Human Development from The University of Iowa.

He taught, counseled and coached at Iowa City Central Junior High from 1959 to 1965. From 1965 to 1967, he was part of a team that developed the Pine Ridge Job Corps Center near Chadron, and later the Lincoln Job Corps Center in Lincoln, Neb. In 1967, he joined the staff at Kirkwood Community College, serving as counselor, director of counseling and in 1 1981 Dean of Student Affairs. Retiring in 1993 from Kirkwood, he was later appointed by Gov. Terry Branstad to the Iowa State Board of Education, completing a fiveyear term in April of 2002.

John belonged to many organizations over his career including the American Counseling Association, Iowa Community College Student Services Association (charter member), Phi Delta Kappa, National Association of State Boards of Education and was past-president of the Iowa Association of Community College Student Services Deans and Directors. In addition to his passion for education and his love of his family, he loved all forms of athletics, rarely missing an Iowa Home Football game. John's family includes his wife, Norma; daughter, Christine McPherren (Matthew) and their children, Eric and Dan McPherren, Ryan White (Deandra) and their children, Andre and Amerie of Iowa City; daughter, Laura Thompson (Larry) and their children, Joseph, Christopher, Janet and Daniel Thompson of Sault Ste. Marie, son, John White (Becky Kessler) of Riverside; son, Kevin White (Barbara) and their children, Jesse, Lindsey and Neil (Anna) of Iowa City; two sisters-inlaw, Lorna and Isabelle Smith; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Claire Palmer; brothers-in-law, Calvin, Judge, Charles, Kenneth Smith and Leonard Hill; and sisters-in-law, June Smith, Mary Smith and Ila Hill.

Marvin was born July 9, 1926, the son of Folkar and Klara (Fed' dersen) Hinrichs in Clarence. He married Marguerite Fothergill. She preceded him in death. On May 7, 1983, he married Grace Schockemoehl Hirtz in Ehler. Marvin served with the U.S.

Army during World War II with the occupation forces in Japan. He was a lifelong farmer. Marvin was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Coggon, the two-cylinder club and Ryan American Legion Post No. 692.
