For years, scientists believed that female stinkbugs from the Dinidoridae family possessed tympanal organs on their hind legs, similar to the hearing mechanisms found in grasshoppers and moths. However, a closer inspection revealed a startling truth.
The "tympanal organs" were, in fact, mobile fungal nurseries, a biological phenomenon never witnessed before.
Dinidoridae, a small stinkbug family native to Asia, has long been overlooked in favor of its larger relatives. Previous research on their unique hind leg organs was limited, relying mostly on taxonomic and morphological approaches. "Taxonomists described an enlarged part resembling tympanal organs in crickets," explained Takema Fukatsu, an evolutionary biologist leading the study.
Fukatsu's team set out to understand the impact of this unusual organ placement on the stinkbugs' hearing abilities. What they found was astonishing.
The enlarged parts on the hind legs were not involved in hearing at all. Instead, they housed thousands of tiny pores filled with harmless filamentous fungi. These pores were connected to secretory cells, suggesting a nutrient-rich environment for fungal growth.
