The Precision Farming Challenge:
Many farmers in Lotlhakane East are facing a hurdle when it comes to adopting advanced farming techniques. The issue? A lack of formal training in precision farming equipment, like high-tech planters, among self-taught tractor operators. This gap in knowledge is hindering the region's agricultural progress.
Mr. Philip Keosentse, a local farmer, voiced his concerns during a recent demonstration of precision planters organized by John Deere-Agri Equipment. He highlighted that most tractor operators in the area are self-trained, relying solely on their basic driving skills. This limits their ability to utilize the full potential of modern ploughing implements.
The Subsistence Farmer's Struggle:
This challenge hits subsistence farmers the hardest. Mr. Keosentse suggests that tractor dealerships could play a pivotal role in bridging this knowledge gap. By partnering with farmers to provide training during the warranty period, dealerships can foster a more welcoming environment for technological advancements in farming.

Mr. Keosentse believes that operator demonstrations alone are insufficient. He advocates for comprehensive training to ensure farmers can harness the benefits of precision farming. The Allure of Traditional Methods:
Some farmers, like Mr. Itumeleng, remain loyal to traditional planters due to their simplicity and manual operation. However, John Deere's technical marketer, Mr. Zein Mopati, revealed the advantages of precision planters during the demonstration. These advanced machines offer precise seed placement, adjustable row spacing, and utilize software and sensors to optimize seed planting, potentially boosting yields.
Maximizing Yield, But at What Cost?
Mr. Mopati emphasized the planter's accuracy in seed and fertilizer distribution, which is key to enhancing crop germination and overall potential. Yet, he cautioned farmers about the use of ungraded seeds, stressing the importance of seed quality for successful germination.
