Wontons are a type of dumplings, which by now you know I LOVE – these are made with pork and shrimp. If you prefer chicken, try my Chicken and Cilantro Wontons (a copycat recipe for the Trader Joe's kind) or my Vegetable Dumplings – you won't even miss not having any meat!

Is crab rangoon the same as cream cheese wontons? ›

Wontons filled with cream cheese and imitation crab are named after the city – crab rangoons, whereas wontons just filled with cream cheese are often referred to as wontons – but they are used interchangeably. Wontons when not referred to as “cream cheese wontons” refer to dumplings like in my Wonton Soup.

How to pan fry wontons? ›

Heat a 10-inch/25cm non-stick pan over medium high heat, and add the neutral oil. Add the wontons in one layer to the pan, and fry for a few minutes, or until the bottoms are golden brown and slightly crispy. With the pan still over medium-high heat, use a cover as a shield and add ⅓ cup water.

What happens if I heat cream cheese? ›

To start, place your filling in the middle of your wrapper and then fold the wrapper closed in a triangle shape. Take care to remove the air as you close it and seal the edges with water. You could stop here, with a samosa style wonton, or fold the corner in horizontally to create an envelope shape. Seal with water.

How to keep wontons from falling apart? ›

A little water acts as the “glue” to keep the wontons sealed tight so they don't fall apart as they cook. Remember to buy square wrappers (round wrappers don't work with this folding technique) and press as much air out of the wontons as you can while sealing them.

How do you keep wontons crispy after frying? ›

Just place them on a cooling rack set over a baking sheet.

In much the same way, putting fried food on a cooling rack means the excess oil will drip off, but there's enough air circulating underneath the food that the bottoms don't get soggy.

How do you know when wontons are done? ›

Bring a wok halfway full with water to a boil, and then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook the wontons in batches until they float to the surface, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon.

Why do my wontons puff up? ›

During the deep frying process, the water in the filling can turn into steam and cause the wonton to puff up and even burst, causing the filling to ooze out, leaving only an empty shell.

What is Panda Express cream cheese Rangoon made of? ›

What Makes the Panda Express Cream Cheese Rangoon the Best? These crispy wonton apps are stuffed with a mixture of cream cheese, scallions, and a dash of garlic powder. They make satisfying finger food for game day, or you can try dolling them up to make casual co*cktail appetizers.

What is the origin of cream cheese wontons? ›

Invented in the 1950s at Trader Vic's, a popular chain of Polynesian-style tiki-themed bars in San Francisco, the only thing authentically Chinese about these wontons is the wrapping. That's totally okay because this is one of the tastiest inventions in history, in my opinion.

Are cream cheese rangoons vegetarian? ›

The inside of these crispy rangoons contains cream cheese and diced scallions (no crab here!), so they're technically vegetarian-friendly if you can get past the fact that they are fried in the same fryers as non-vegetarian items.

Are wontons unhealthy? ›

Wontons may provide some protein, but they may also be high in sodium and fat, depending on how they are prepared. Enjoyed in moderation, these steamed dumplings or wonton soup can add variety to a balanced diet.
