The simple answer to this question is yes. Adults can definitely get head lice. In fact, any person that has hair can contract head lice. However, it is not something that tends to be very common in adults.

Head lice are extremely common, especially in children, but anyone can get them. Getting lice doesn't mean anything about your personal hygiene or living circ*mstances, and you have plenty of options for treating infestations fast.

You should check all members of your household (and any close contacts) for head lice with detection combing. You can get head lice in adults as well as in children.

A nymph is an immature louse which matures into an adult in about 7-12 days after hatching. A nymph must feed on blood to survive. It looks like an adult head louse but is about the size of a pinhead. The adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed, has 6 legs (each with claws), and is tan to grayish white in color.

Most OTC head lice treatments don't kill nits, so a second application may be necessary to kill the nymphs once they hatch.

Most children who are exposed to someone with head lice do not get them. Lice cannot jump or fly. They can only crawl. Lice are only passed to others by close head-to-head contact.

Head lice are spread through direct head-to-head contact. The lice do not hop, jump, or fly, so sitting near someone with head lice does not increase the risk of getting the lice. Lice are commonly spread throughout schools. Transmissions in schools are rare.

If you see nits and small, moving lice, you've likely had lice for 1.5 to 2 weeks. This is because you aren't seeing a lot of adult lice but are still seeing small, hatched nymphs along with lots more nits than a person who'd only been affected for a few days. Nits, nymphs, and adult lice: 2 weeks or longer.

Head lice usually lay nits at the nape of the neck or behind the ears in clusters. They cluster close to the scalp which indicates that they are viable. They are usually at a distance of less than one centimeter from the scalp. If you begin to find that the nits are further away from the scalp, they may not be viable.

Lice are parasites that feed on human blood and can be found on people's bodies. There are treatments for the itching caused by lice bites but they do not get rid of the infestation. Lice will not go away on their own. The infestation needs to be treated.

The female louse secretes this glue-like substance when she lays her eggs to protect them until they hatch. The glue hardens upon secretion and does not dissipate when a nit dies. For that reason, dead lice remain cemented onto the hair shaft until you manually or chemically remove them or the hair grows out.

Tea Tree Oil. Though many people are sensitive to tea tree oil, it has been shown to be effective at killing lice. One study showed a 100% mortality rate after 30 minutes of treatment. A tea tree oil-scented spray or shampoo may be useful in preventing reinfestation.

Malathion (Ovide). This very strong lotion paralyzes and kills lice and some lice eggs. It's approved for use in kids aged 6 years and older. If you still see lice moving 7-9 days later, you'll need a second treatment.

Children between the ages of 3 and 12 years are the most commonly affected age group because they are in close contact with each other at school and daycare settings. These children often spread lice to their families at home. The peak season for lice infestation is August through October and again in January.

If you're uncertain whether you or a family member has lice, see your doctor. Your doctor can use a special light called a Wood's light to make the nits more visible. They can identify whether or not you have lice. If you do have lice, it's possible to use home treatments to get rid of lice and avoid further symptoms.

Use fingers to separate hair and create a part. The part should allow you to clearly see the person's scalp. Look for lice crawling on the scalp where the hair is parted or on the hair shaft. The lice will be dark in color and the size of a poppyseed.

If you have body lice, first bathe with soap and water. After bathing, apply permethrin (Nix) to the affected areas before bedtime and then shower in the morning. Repeat this treatment nine days after the first application. Also take other measures to get rid of body lice.
