Description

Can your 6th graders find the area triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and composite shapes to escape the pizza shop? This sixth grade geometry activity is packed with challenging area word problems and challenges, and encourages active learning and collaboration. Polly's World Famous Polygon Pizza has five puzzles for your students to solve to show their geometry skills! This engaging escape room can be completed digitally by accessing a Google Form, or by using a printed version. Put your students' knowledge of finding the area of triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and composite shapes to the test with five unique puzzle challenges. Problem solving skills and cooperation will come in to play as students work on these geometric pizza puzzles!

The digital escape room offers two options. Both options include the same puzzles, however option B breaks each puzzle down into steps and offers additional hints to allow for differentiation.

Included in this digital/print breakout:

  • Directions for both digital and print escape rooms
  • QR code and URL link to access automated Google Form™ for digital version
  • Printable clues to create a menu for Polly's Pizza and Puzzles for the printable version (same five puzzles as digital)
  • Detailed answer key
  • Success signs for students to take a picture with after they complete the escape room challenge
  • Options to use this online escape room for distance learning including detailed directions to create a copy of the form, and a Google Slide™ with to help students work out one of the puzzles (please note that this slide will require students to have their own Google Drives™. Having a Google Drive™ is NOT a requirement to complete the digital breakout activity).

This escape room was specifically designed for Common Core math standard 6.G.A.1. 6th grade geometry has never been so much fun! It can also be used by advanced 5th graders, or for review for older grades. Escape rooms lessons can be used for enrichment, review, to challenge early finishers, to encourage collaboration, or even for homework!

To complete the five puzzles in this geometry breakout activity, student must be able to:

  • Find the area of triangles
  • Find the missing base or height of a triangle when the area is known
  • Determine the area of a trapezoid
  • Calculate the area of a parallelogram
  • Find the area of composite shapes
  • Use their knowledge of area to solve real world math problems
  • Solve simple substitution ciphers
  • This particular lesson uses whole numbers, not decimals or fractions

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge relatively quickly (30 minutes), others will take 45-60 minutes or more. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
